He won't load into the trailer? Take a breath, then try this
The trailer is open, the clock is ticking, and he just stands there, rooted to the spot. Before you lose your temper (the worst idea), here is why he refuses and how to change his mind.
First, understand the 'no'
A horse does not refuse to annoy you. He sees a dark cave, a floor that moves, a ramp. His instinct screams 'trap'. Your calm is your first tool: a tense handler, and it is game over.
The tricks that work
- A welcoming trailer: open everything up, lower the ramp, let the light in. A dark trailer is frightening.
- Practise on a calm day, with no trip planned: a few minutes, a reward in the trailer, and you stop on a success.
- Step by step: praise every foot placed forward, however tiny. You reward the effort, not just the result.
- Stay straight in front, do not pull to the side. A horse pushes against pressure: the more you pull, the more he backs off.
What you must never doShout, hit, pull with several people, or force with a rope behind the hindquarters. You win a battle, you lose trust, and the next loading will be worse.
Well-being changes everything
A horse that associates the trailer with good moments (hay, calm, pleasant outings) loads willingly. A horse that has only ever known stress there learns to refuse. Rebuild the association, patiently.
Loading is won at home, in a calm setting, well before departure day. Invest fifteen minutes now and then, and you save hours (and your nerves) on the big day.
