Equestrian glossary
The vocabulary used on oPaddock, defined plainly: what a stable, a field, an indoor or outdoor arena, a lunging ring or a solarium is, and how each one is rented.
- Stable (box)
- An individual covered stall for one horse. Bedding is usually straw or wood shavings: each stall states which, because a horse with sensitive airways does not tolerate both equally. Rented by the night.
- Field / paddock
- Fenced outdoor accommodation. It may hold several horses: the listing states how many, because putting an unfamiliar horse into an established group is not a small thing. Rented by the night.
- Indoor arena
- A covered working area, usable in any weather. Rented by the hour.
- Outdoor arena
- An outdoor working area, usually sand-surfaced. Rented by the hour.
- Lunging ring
- A circular area, often fifteen to twenty metres across, for lunging or loose work. Rented by the hour.
- Solarium
- An infrared dryer placed above the horse, used after work or washing. Rented by the quarter hour.
- Travelling rider
- A rider taken in for a short stay, as opposed to a year-round livery. This is oPaddock's public: they arrive in the evening and often leave the next day.
- Overnight stop
- One night on a journey on horseback, as opposed to a stay. A stop is chosen first on the distance from the last one, not on comfort.
